Within the framework of the Breaking Walls Dance Festival, the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo hosted a special screening of the performance film Frontières Tunisie, created and produced by the Instabili Vaganti Performing Group in collaboration with the Théâtre National Tunisien and the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunis.

Set inside the UNESCO archaeological site of the Temple of Oudna near Tunis, the work transforms an ancient landscape into a living stage where movement, memory, and identity intersect. Rather than presenting dance as a spectacle alone, Frontières Tunisie uses the body as a cinematic language, translating borders into gestures and space into emotion.

The film brings together Italian and Tunisian performers who weave tradition and contemporary expression into a shared ritual. Their movements echo histories carved into stone while questioning the invisible lines that shape belonging, migration, and cultural memory. Each scene becomes a dialogue between past and present, between the personal and the collective.

Screened at the Italian Cultural Institute in Zamalek, the atmosphere of the Melik Palace added another layer to the experience. The audience was invited not only to watch, but to feel how performance film can travel across geographies and reframe heritage through art. The space itself mirrored the film’s spirit: a meeting point for cultures, stories, and artistic languages.

The event was attended by cultural practitioners and artists from different backgrounds, including Omnia El Minyawi, who participated representing the Egyptian side of the team at the Italian Cultural Institute. Her presence reflected the spirit of cross-cultural collaboration that the work itself embodies where local voices meet international artistic dialogue through performance and film.

Through Frontières Tunisie, Instabili Vaganti continues its exploration of physical theatre and site-specific cinema, where the performer’s body becomes an archive and movement becomes a form of storytelling. The work stands as a reminder that borders are not only political lines, but emotional and cultural territories that art can cross, soften, and reimagine.

By hosting this screening, Breaking Walls Dance Festival and the Italian Cultural Institute reinforced their commitment to contemporary dance and performance film as tools for dialogue, connecting the Mediterranean through creativity, collaboration, and embodied narratives.
